How to survive a year 7 camp … if you are a parent.
What you need
to know.
- Risk management strategies are in place through out
camp. These include wearing of uniforms, care group and care leaders who
have rolls, counter-checking mechanisms – roll call and head count (kids
sit in same seat), care groups and buddy pairs.
- We start early (5:00 walk for early-early risers or
those who do not go to sleep before 3am and 5:30 walk for early
risers) and finish late. We have one supervisor on duty during the night.
Kids leaving rooms or found in other rooms (eg girls in boys or vice
versa - will be sent home.)
- This is no holiday camp - we are on the go for the
whole week and kids will be expected to look after their own personal
arrangements.
- Misbehaviour is not anticipated but we can not
tolerate any behaviour which endangers others – please reinforce this with
your children.
- Responsibility is expected – eg meeting times must
be adhered to.
- Emergency contact no – 0407697203 – or
contact the school during school hours 49715111. You can leave SMS
messages on the mobile contact.
- Students will be placed in care groups and bus
groups prior to camp. On Sunday students should gather with their gear
near their bus groups. They must report to their care leader to have their
roll m. The seat they take on the bus will be their seat for the duration
of the camp.
How to help us/your children
- Pack morning tea and lunch for Sunday trip in
disposable container so everything can be thrown away. Will be placed in
eskies for the trip.
- Check for lollies – they will be confiscated during
the camp (You all know what sugared- up AND TIRED children are like)
- Pack the days clothing in a separate bag which will
also double as the laundry bag – Strong plastic bags are the best. Cheap
ones do not stand up to the rough treatment.
Misc Arrangements
- Kids can phone you at various locations during the
week. Most phones are coin operated so give them a supply of coins if
necessary. Set up a home link number if you wish. HOWEVER we will not halt
arrangements for children to make calls.
- Home sickness lasts only a day or two and we are all
used to managing this. Do not respond to homesickness as it often worsens
the problem. Phone calls to children prone to homesickness may complicate
the problem.
- Disco clothes are flexible.
- No jewellery or make up during the day.
- Only children with specific allergies will receive a
special diet. All children (and adults) will all be given the same food -
vegetables and all!
What your kids will try to do.
- Bring lollies
- Spend a fortune on souvenirs/rubbish/junk food.
Please outline your expectations.
Money issues
- Kids have to look after their own cash
- They can use key cards at commercial venues but do
not have the time to divert.
- Only issue the maximum you want your kids to spend.
Stuff to bring
- Watch – kids need to know the time – a cheap watch
will do for the week.
- Camera – we will be taking digital cameras and down
load to the laptop. These can be emailed to your home if necessary. Kids
and camera = lots of money and lots of crummy photos.
- Wet pack for towels, swimmers canoeing clothes etc.
- Games boys – at own risk. Walkman – with ear phones
for trip down only.
What Not to bring
- Anything of significant value
- Torches, mobile phones or anything that can be
dangerous.
Medication
- Miss Lilly in charge of medication
- Give to Miss Lilly before the departure date.
- Complete medication form
- Place medication in a zip lock plastic bag clearly
labelled with name and details.
